Business in Brazil: Navalshore 2014

Brazil has been home to one of the world's fastest growing economies and powerhouse of South America with a GDP of 2.4 trillion. The country continues to be one of the world's most active offshore oil and gas regions of the world. Dominated by state owned Petrobras, their business plan includes investing over $224 billion in exploration, production, refining, transportation and distribution.  The oil and gas industry is expecting to increase the number of offshore supply vessels in Brazil from 136 in 2012 to 358 by 2020. Also, there are 73 offshore production platforms/vessels under construction or planned the coming years.

Since 2009, BTCRD has been working to identify, evaluate and pursue opportunities in Brazil for NL companies and organizations.  BTCRD has assisted in six missions, led two Atlantic Canadian market studies and assisted in hosting 8 incoming delegations. Brazil's offshore oil and gas industry is providing many opportunities and local export leaders are focused on providing new technology to harness this market's tremendous potential.  However, experienced local exporters are in agreement that in order to be successful in Brazil it is important to be in market, build strong alliances and follow up with sales support.

BTCRD has a well developed workplan for Brazil.  One of the key components of that workplan was a mission to Navalshore 2014 in partnership with NATI (Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries) and ACOA (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). Through this partnership with industry and our federal colleagues, participants were able to receive additional support and concentrated expertise to navigate this complex market. Navalshore 2014 was a strategic event for the maritime value chain in Brazil and provides opportunities for companies to connect with 86% of Brazil's most active shipyards representing 10 Brazilian states. This is the second year NL has participated in Navalshore.

Navalshore has proven to be a highly successful event for NL companies.  EMSAT Corporation of St. John's, NL recently signed an agreement of cooperation with AMBIDADOS, of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, a partnership that grew from business development efforts and relationship building at both Navalshore 2013 and 2014.

“Our relationship with the team at AMBIDADOS began in 2013.  This agreement reflects EMSAT's view that partnerships are the most practical and successful way to enter a new market and are the foundation of EMSAT's business and marketing strategies.  Together we have worked diligently to determine how the integration of our respective technologies could be a game changer for monitoring in the offshore sector and for maritime and port facilities.  Work will begin immediately between EMSAT and AMBIDADOS for applications in Brazil and other parts of the world including Canada and the United States.” –Dan Brake, CEO of EMSAT Corporation
